When Madeline Swift receives word announcing her father’s impending demise she jumps in her car and heads home after ten years. She arrives to find her flamboyant father, Kenneth as hale as ever but the family business going down the drink. The Swift family has been running their theatre on a prayer for years and now the bank is foreclosing. Kenneth is launching a production of King Lear, completely clueless as to the impending doom of the theatre. The rest of the family enlists Madeline to keep the theatre going for Dad’s swan song. Margret the leading lady and matriarch of the family has been ignoring the bills for two years. Madeline’s sister, Eloise, the perky ingénue is completely distracted by her upcoming wedding to the Mayor’s son and their rakish brother Max has only sarcasm to add to the mix.
In an unfortunate party accident Madeline breaks one of the actor’s legs and is forced to step into the role of the Fool opposite her father, a most daunting return to the stage. Then Javier, world class designer and lothario arrives on the scene to woo Madeline but she’s already had her heart broken once by the smoldering Casanova. Meanwhile Madeline’s Hollywood boss, B-movie auteur Garren Rose descends on her family and immediately smitten with the town decides it’s a must location to shoot his upcoming oeuvre, Nazi Death Battalion. Madeline tries to keep the theatre afloat, play a stuttering fool in iambic pentameter, hunt down 200 pairs of jackboots, keep her virtue intact, and stave off the townsfolk from rounding up the family with torches and pitchforks. Into this saunters Jacob, a charming, mysterious man who might save the day or get the whole lot thrown in jail.

It is a surprise to learn that Emily MaClean is a first time novelist. She has such an authoritative and distinctive style in her writing, and one can only hope that the characters and settings she wove throughout The Fabulous Invalid will return in some other new adventure still to be written by this talented writer. This is a story filled with characters and settings which are pulled from the depths of experience and skills of a person of wonderful powers of observation, imagination, insight, and wisdom (not to mention the humor infused throughout!). The dialogue is seamless and hilarious. One wants to be a part of this story as a witness to all that is happening. It is a story that one does not want to end. Endearing, with a great theme of family and the family which only the theater can create, this is on my, "Must reread and tell others to read," list. Bravo!Product details

The Fabulous Invalid eBook Emily MacLean Reviews
The author's writing style is elegant and beautiful to read. The characters are immediately descriptive, engaging the reader into highbrow humour and sentiment along with amazing insight in the theatre world.
THE WAY MS. MACLEAN DRAWS HER CHARACTERS IS TRULY REMARKABLE. THEY ARE SMART, FOIBLED AND HILARIOUS. SHE TAKES THE READER ON A FASCINATING JOURNEY BEHIND THE SCENES OF SMALL TOWN LIFE, LOW-BUDGET FILMS AND THAT MYSTERIOUS LADY, THE THEATER. THERE IS HUMOR, ROMANCE AND INTRIGUE. A GREAT READ!!
I absolutely loved this book. Ms. MacLean's years in the ups and downs of theater have obviously gifted her with the talent to not only voice incredible characters, but to bring us through their journey in a real and visceral way. As the Bard tells us, 'All the World's a Stage', and thank God for that! What a masterpiece! Brava!
If you love Theatre, you'll adore "Fabulous Invalid." What a wicked sense of humor Emily Mac Lean has!. She has written a witty, clever, sexy book about a struggling theatrical family in New England, who survive by Hook and by Crook -- and I do mean "Crook!" A truly impressive first novel. ,
Exceptionally well-drawn characters, hilarious situations, wonderful dialogue. I loved the small town theatre setting, which was so specific and real, it's clear the author knows it firsthand. Emily MacLean has a great voice. It's a thoroughly fun read, and I couldn't recommend it more highly.
The Fabulous Invalid is very good. I learned a lot about the theater. The author has the knowledge necessary to write such a novel She, obviously, understands the background of the theater and know how to put it across to her readers. I have recommended this book to a number of mystery loving friends.

"The Fabulous Invalid" vaults the reader into the world of the theatre. I have been an observer of that world from the inside, and I like the characterizations of these people. Each live theatre performance is a miraculous and mysterious creation. This book shows miracles and mysteries in the lives of its people as well. They are entertaining, frustrating, and genuine. I was immediately drawn in by the author's style of description and dialogue. Buy it!
